Unfortunately, we spent most of the afternoon at the car dealership waiting for some minor repairs to be done on our CRV.<br /><br />But, as luck would have it, it was finished late in the afternoon...which just happened to be a great time to think about finding a place along the water for a drink and/or dinner.<br /><br />We thought we'd try a place we hadn't been to before, so we headed east to Chester Basin.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238818072781469490" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvOIFtx88qzrTpVfBm58c0Ig4kE3x_9fNRKz6CRplUnUg1HOZlEcO70IAL2DKfLfQQM81F_F5arFCEbYmsIcVBEhlt-t1PPwlh_qQ0TR3hYRdLOBJuVQS2VL6ePAAYlIfmyGZ7bZ_HXwqP/s400/SeasideShantyRestaurant-(11.jpg" border="0" />Frankly, The Seaside Shanty Restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238818069462310050" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hwMQYKP_gHA/SLQFRxky3KI/AAAAAAAAAwE/U2yj5LgNlO0/s400/SeasideShantyRestaurant-(9).jpg" border="0" />But, what a lovely view from the screened in porch!<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238818068574976258" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_hwMQYKP_gHA/SLQFRuRPOQI/AAAAAAAAAv8/hXRb5QmJ7Nk/s400/SeasideShantyRestaurant-(2).jpg" border="0" />John had seafood chowder, which was packed with all kinds of seafood. It was quite early in the gardening season around here, and their garden was quite spectacular. It gave me some inspiration for creating a veggie garden at our newly acquired "farm" next year.<br /><br />While we were there, our neighbour grinned and told me she had enough vegetables to make a Hodge Podge for dinner the night before. I smiled and said something like "that's great" but I actually had no idea what she was talking about.<br /><br />Fast forward a few weeks and John and I were driving home after watching some sailboat races in Chester. We stopped at a roadside vegetable shop, and they actually had "hodge podge" listed as one of their feature items.<br /><br />So...I just had to ask the owner to explain Hodge Podge. Apparently it's a Nova Scotia classic meal, but only in parts of Nova Scotia. It's particularly popular on the South Shore. She told me what was involved and here is the official recipe:<br /><br /><strong>Ingredients:</strong><br />15-18 new baby potatoes<br />1 medium onion, peeled, quartered<br />1 clove garlic, peeled, crushed with side of knife (clove should be intact)<br />1 bunch fresh new carrots<br />1 pound fresh yellow and/or green string beans<br />1 pound fresh peas<br />2-3 ears fresh corn, shucked, broken into thirds (optional)<br />2 cups light coffee cream<br />1/4 cup butter (not margarine)<br />salt and freshy ground pepper<br />chives to garnish<br /><br /><strong>Instructions:</strong><br />Rinse potatoes but don't peel. Cut tops off carrots. Rinse well, but don't peel. Tip and tail beans. Shell peas.<br /><br />Put potatoes in large pot. Add just enough water to barely cover. Add 1 tsp salt, garlic and onion. Cover and bring to a boil, cooking potatoes for 10 minutes or until halfway done. Add more water if necessary, just to steam boil veggies.<br /><br />Add carrots. Cover and turn heat down to barely boiling. Cook until carrots halfway done. Add beans, peas and corn. Cook until tender-crisp.<br /><br />Check water level. There shoud be about 1 cup. Turn heat to low. Add cream and butter. Be careful not to curdle cream. Season with salt and pepper.<br /><br />Ladle into bowls. Add garnish. Serve immediately.<br /><br />I've been told that Hodge Podge is even better if refrigerated and warmed up the next day.<br />I've also been told that it's meant to be a meal....not a side dish.<br /><br />I haven't tried it out myself. If you try it, let me know what you think!Sara and Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15434230667597239457noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6359397686590093594.post-5974554637256635012008-08-21T14:12:00.005-03:002008-08-21T14:25:58.429-03:00Dublin Shore<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237022134936938658" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjXJ4YEu-B8NUF-0vTHhMhPvPZ2zwAX7yJI58Fjy4_VpgfwPpofHbvKaV0zrVoWk4fa7CzVCs0ZW3oA3BvC8s7XmC8U7cd22rJgWJ8sYlH8wlF-vUaVNt5hq7TTt9jQ93KW3mvSqbR1OSI/s400/DublinShore-(11).jpg" border="0" /> If you want to see a small working wharf, take a drive out to the Dublin Shore government wharf. It was the start of Scallop Days in Digby so there were some vendors out and some grandstands in the downtown street awaiting the parade. <div><div><br /><div>We didn't stay for the parade (it being late in the day and we had 1 1/2 hour drive to get home to feed the animals) but we did take a walk out on the docks.</div><br /><div>Despite the threatening skies, it didn't rain and it was quite a pleasant walk. I love looking at the fishing boats (mostly scallop boats in this harbour I think). </div><br /><div>After our walk, we stopped at a dockside seafood store and picked up a couple of pounds of scallops fresh from the ocean. Popped them into our trusty cooler for the drive back, and found a roadside stand along the way selling fresh corn, tomatoes and blueberries. We had a late night dinner of barbequed scallops wrapped in bacon, bbq'd corn on the cob, and sliced tomatoes. High bush blueberries (big fat juicy ones) for dessert. Yum.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG2QF_3yiJI1FNLnmchQQS3pEPXeAilScvd7w1_z2zVeywOFpIs8kewejfkI3Tm7uR16N0xXSD40dKzeXCWJoC3L_rSGgLI0Vlx-o04N4HVfk2dbE_3-inTtsKX-yqpB_98_xzLaNR-lRZ/s1600-h/Digby_boats.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235936339022413442" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUG2QnVN3qKSVFv9V-X5dzjF9VafPGgxbQPuPUypvlqUsSEgHLzpPZXuBMtv17XXOPhwPY96UHsbHPWNrF5s5JiPXBwyXTX-DVdbLDzlJJoO4D9CL7vBDwAHlNwRXoYadbgFdONfohZYnu/s400/Digby_harbour.jpg" border="0" /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235932811148203730" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYwzgYXPa1-Jq-5odFcHwWIz3K2gxwOC1P7YDMsWc8qiBl_iQNXRWDjXFUGHcI7xbstxaiVk-lFj7ZOPHaaxmMbCmyn5AeeIgvx3iaFtHzIiFhrnBf6mqbEXPoqHYQgvgFEBURVs99B0mE/s400/Digby_view.jpg" border="0" /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235932809693912066" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXitx5ANVl1POEZrnKl_X47ee4poFAGg3mcH0ALekZVNUEXwvefkOXNuFyovCDpLOPUDzYKi8HhJ-35-dtsMs3zDO9Nx-wLewQm0rD4znR3GhCLdOhhVFAjw_VZfT8lai5VPUT51ic2iYi/s400/DigbyHarbour.jpg" border="0" /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5235932798574681378" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG2QF_3yiJI1FNLnmchQQS3pEPXeAilScvd7w1_z2zVeywOFpIs8kewejfkI3Tm7uR16N0xXSD40dKzeXCWJoC3L_rSGgLI0Vlx-o04N4HVfk2dbE_3-inTtsKX-yqpB_98_xzLaNR-lRZ/s400/Digby_boats.jpg" border="0" /></a></div></div></div><br />We'll have to get back to Digby for another day out. I overheard someone say that he had been busy publishing a motorcycle book. That caught my interest since John's son is a motorcycle enthusiast.<br /><br />We ran into the man a little later on the street. Being that we were in Nova Scotia, where people actually talk to each other (as opposed to places in Ontario where everyone is a little too busy to bother with anyone else) I stopped and asked the man about his book.<br /><br />It turns out we met Harold...the editor for the Motorcycle Tour Guide Nova Scotia.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeiEYLgAVoQIF3dHVyululNRM2n1DAwHGcJu8C6_tUrtyTX4ZWXKSKWX9vYylB0mObyZFlErD-rZsEjLzDMtEjZuwWR4X6zAKGG97S1kcEQbrIqWo0F1GLD66xbRnhidP18emBThtysAvb/s1600-h/MotorcycleGuide.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5234735550916816994" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeiEYLgAVoQIF3dHVyululNRM2n1DAwHGcJu8C6_tUrtyTX4ZWXKSKWX9vYylB0mObyZFlErD-rZsEjLzDMtEjZuwWR4X6zAKGG97S1kcEQbrIqWo0F1GLD66xbRnhidP18emBThtysAvb/s400/MotorcycleGuide.jpg" border="0" /></a> This is a great little reference book, and not just for bikers. I'm not much of a museum fan (I love the history of old things, and love antique stores and auctions but for some reason find museums a little dull). <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233654872735336754" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgu1ViRqczhu563gZ1wE-wIg8VfqLRmzDoh47Lb8QAyLsHukBqs5jLlLm1hyphenhyphensVwsRmVrSMTIwy8Ns-EQ03GzrF3CxLq3n9RSHdW2fSQ3hzXjJ9AOBBFh7UUh5XcImKLfOTAX5AaA6J-R22W/s400/AnnRoyal_FortAnneSite.jpg" border="0" />But the walk around the grounds was wonderful.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE0kT4aU1LOTMHtfH8qPl_0Z256msuc3jrxY7vCud-NoPJcQY5hLdUZV1Zb84VAWCJflQoYvufVc1gfDwFviQeMboF3tOVYmHVbeN93Qfo8CRBdwRttnggyJwspgu9s0QX-h_xwyrOSYju/s1600-h/AnnRoyal_FortAnneTrenches2.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233654874936213394" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhup7H6FbINCbigQvVjkUF8SmqBgh8cxsy7-TOoYCaPkR38l29HaZzQf2QOlsSFAWhX39KANmGv7ZrX8S_AuE8cemjf8Bak1PYxTCNwEc80J1Mk1rFLzuPAGR7QDoCwGIBuhPDMd6ezzYVT/s400/AnnRoyal_FortAnneTrenches.jpg" border="0" /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233655215472981506" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE0kT4aU1LOTMHtfH8qPl_0Z256msuc3jrxY7vCud-NoPJcQY5hLdUZV1Zb84VAWCJflQoYvufVc1gfDwFviQeMboF3tOVYmHVbeN93Qfo8CRBdwRttnggyJwspgu9s0QX-h_xwyrOSYju/s400/AnnRoyal_FortAnneTrenches2.jpg" border="0" /></a> Here is a plaque showing the footprint of the fort:<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233654863637859586" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRxn_-sGd3JAQZ6C9FB4Ieu9cRbzCHvvpBgQsN4Xc6hBaJ46AQ6xGeMGWopC-Su_KHFAfQaXSFM1ToR2ZVjzeDKh5-_rBejTUTpTW7P3rO_SaHdGhp860feW-KmkVU6KN_m2KkCAnFYNLK/s400/AnnRoyal_FortAnneMap.jpg" border="0" />From the descriptions on the sign: <div><div>A <em>ravelin</em> is a triangular defensive work built in the ditch in front of the curtain wall.<br /><br />The <em>glacis</em> is a slope of land approaching a fortification which is shaped so all areas are exposed to cannon fire.<br /><br />The <em>covered way</em> is a kind of road that runs around the ditch and is protected by the slope of the glacis. Led by Alexander's son, the Scots built a small fort, the remains of which lie beneath Fort Anne. Despite many deaths during the first winter, the surviving colonists thrived on agriculture, fishing, and trade with the Mi'kmaq. Most returned to Great Britain in 1632 after France reacquired the region by treaty. Although the colonization attempt was short-lived, the province of Nova Scotia owes its name, flag, and coat of arms to this early Scottish settlement.</div>Sara and Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15434230667597239457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6359397686590093594.post-56798321139925232292008-08-11T11:46:00.001-03:002008-08-21T14:05:58.266-03:00Annapolis RoyalFriday we had a lovely trip to the north coast of Nova Scotia and made it to the Evangeline Trail (all our previous jaunts have been along the Lighthouse Route). We drove up to Middleton, and then headed west. We stopped in Annapolis Royal to stretch our legs and get a bite to eat. I took this photo to show you the height of the tides along this coast. Notice the tires at the edge of the pier? That gives you some perspective to see how much the tide goes up and down.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233273705268242498" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSnxVUIYLrodtkqesKCrKIypDDNqKRVNt8TYmr2Ag1ynE16AWwyND1snnpVwrF92JXiBB6cl9Bv33V00VqrQ-xUdS1QbrSYJr86AlztXmuTYdMFYQ1zpz4L1MePXJjGV6eZOCT3h2CQFhz/s400/AnnapolisRoyal_Tide.jpg" border="0" />Annapolis Royal is filled with historic buildings. Two of the oldest wooden buildings in Canada can be found here (one a private residence and one a museum). Beautiful flowers and flower boxes are everywhere. <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233273706169778898" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNz2CTXtmysU6vdBsJrk0euBwSqTD5Bi7OIta1c923P5wbhklpFKDvF9slFephTI9ucZemlZ5t-3lVjjTRx0prMxP_iEMwVI1X5GUsgU7xxsxZin_N0LeEncBfspxbcnzMJprfGeDeNHem/s400/AnnapolisRoyal_Flowers.jpg" border="0" />We had a lovely lunch at a restaurant called Compose. We took our granddaughter there a couple of times. The menu is rather limited...sandwiches, pizza (not your run of the mill pizza slices) or soup. We usually pick up a sandwich (thick slices of home made bread, lettuce, tomato, cheese, real meat (not the packaged sliced meat), and maybe even some radical rhubarb relish.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229563220816206802" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz2rC96kWKiuzuZnjLNoRc7n3XVUKSOw7lUPrnsp5P5mIbBbMQ67nbtgaun36_1TVSzFQEv60X_6XYct9xsRRrXiH4yGiIGX_YUFtmBxNJHGzuJSf2o7FZDiqx7IGHdY11Xxk7JO6h7y-b/s400/LaHaveBakery_2.jpg" border="0" />The bakery also offers lots of cookies and squares. Every year, the <a href="http://www.lunenburgartgallery.com/">Lunenburg Art Gallery</a> hosts this event (formerly called Paint Sea On Site). Artists paint on site on Saturday and Sunday, and they hold a silent auction of the paintings on both days at the Lunenburg Fire Hall. Each piece of art has a "take away" price that's good until 3:30. Anything not purchased for the take away price remains for silent auction until 4:30. It's a fund raiser for the Gallery, and proceeds are split 50%-50% with the artists.<br /><br />We were there both days and on Sunday and I won this little gem...<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hwMQYKP_gHA/SJBvPc72UMI/AAAAAAAAApI/WKfofLnWxNw/s1600-h/WetPaintSale_A.Fraser.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228801478633083074" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hwMQYKP_gHA/SJBvPc72UMI/AAAAAAAAApI/WKfofLnWxNw/s400/WetPaintSale_A.Fraser.jpg" border="0" /></a> "Garden Chair" painted by Anne Fraser. I have looked for information about Anne on line, but I can't find a web site for her and I don't know anything about her. But I love this painting. That chair is just waiting for me to sit in.<br /><br />We'll be back at the Wet Paint Sale again next year. But next year, I'd like to tour around to see the artists in action.Sara and Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15434230667597239457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6359397686590093594.post-89426417293129631742008-07-22T11:13:00.001-03:002008-07-22T11:21:31.012-03:00Port MedwayThis is my favourite photo from our side trip to Port Medway (we were travelling on the Lighthouse Route, Road 331 from Petite Riviere to Liverpool the other day). <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5225841823740979602" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFBRptaHKYvjSCjBhCTegiSo53ZxJUfnLy-Ha-ps-wtLs7lf0KErmodfX1oO6eYUnF-6ssofUVe-GE5jFy9D74i6zNKcQmj6n7HSgwq15JBuGB763iHrCLHjTrPIojmgqAB176rRPbkqxN/s400/PortMedway_History2.jpg" border="0" />Here is the expanded view of the old building and boat. Specifically, we travelled Road 331 from Petite Riviere west to Liverpool.<br /><br />One of the best spots we found that day was Beach Meadows Beach. I can only find one reference to Beach Meadows in the <a href="http://www.novascotia.com/">"Doers and Dreamers" 2008 Travel Guide</a> (a listing for a guest house). There is a brief mention in the <a href="http://www.motorcycletourguidens.com/">Motorcycle Tour Guide of Nova Scotia</a>. (way to go guys!) (Both of these publications are excellent references for tourists and if you're planning on making a trip you should order them)<br /><br />I guess everyone wants to keep the Beach Meadows Beach a secret. And I'm not surprised. It is spectacular!<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224734922060347218" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhasT1JE460Cjm_-5vGxKCRzafcEb8sOsnOM5TdDgeW8rZd1_496hvXa8JYF6dAoyNPDg1uJ8_nLgidFFmTWbHz5iNzOrSyYobfSHcXUx9xezSdd05TACblFZ6KuqKCHv-T6QtbWkQ2n-2d/s400/BeachMeadowsBeach_4.jpg" border="0" />When we were there, it was quite foggy. We guessed we could probably see 200 or 300 feet. But it was also sunny, and quite warm. There were some people swimming and some people sitting on the beach, but not many.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224729690066933378" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvu9N-Uo06ShQ5o399yzOHCaw7Cxy9ltOtc2C7qx6L67DVeo4R3z9qUdFCYzqUQHMeSYa_hIYk27Tr2x04SY0GVsRzmjh92Yu_jmwlPaG2iGJHuCzi5_rGheQF4uRHPVlCEhhhNbd3aKzf/s400/BeachMeadowsBeach_2.jpg" border="0" />Maybe the fog kept them away?<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224730149039702530" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGVoZQr5apFza_bTCvSAjvS-KrNTwiV4-SRRwq7HOYvEeE9NDB6K1cD_ayxB1vYTAOw4LWVQ6a5MAaZLO_CjmE-4TLwdf1S_-bXdUXd3-iL-YMEL8UBxRp7RcE8igsWRN2Ff4SWywmxede/s400/BeachMeadowsBeach_6.jpg" border="0" />But it was a wonderful beach for walking.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224729688553949522" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-L845h_ZRgErmqblMOje1O1EYro452WlVYFQcQNOd-hvZSPf3mfLM6dRN8uG23yL3h1U2b4-pUSTFaJrNGwnGGqv770feab2WyMrV1YBdH2-qeIK5aT_kmEfpII-yLAmACEWI-DYiWdkB/s400/BeachMeadowsBeach_3.jpg" border="0" /> And I'm always happy to avoid the crowds.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224729686746887970" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbciK38AmZVh0dfzSNRCcv5kiANtcNqX1THQEB7ET58DQ13NLjLG1yEZvTx6H40Q5JMpCh44woQssRmgDG-OA5DdDLEGeJFxQ_D43kwHJUEhx0-Gd0K0oK0vDXbq4ptHfpBiqUDQFStr-i/s400/BeachMeadowsBeach.jpg" border="0" />So, if you're traveling on the Lighthouse Route make sure you take a detour off for this spectacular beach!<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiAoPNXAH0x31RdloeOE-e0rYnTjew5KblNbgvfXhYeQn3PDx-7xLCZEt8rjYefQ39FXFN8HHkfhxEoXmGv2OBplOnKiXeC_dpUu7Kpb8LG8I9VNrk9PdxtawjQ1qVBdcoUf5-CN_Yv98Z/s1600-h/BeachMeadowsBeach_5.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224730143345271410" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiAoPNXAH0x31RdloeOE-e0rYnTjew5KblNbgvfXhYeQn3PDx-7xLCZEt8rjYefQ39FXFN8HHkfhxEoXmGv2OBplOnKiXeC_dpUu7Kpb8LG8I9VNrk9PdxtawjQ1qVBdcoUf5-CN_Yv98Z/s400/BeachMeadowsBeach_5.jpg" border="0" /></a>I couldn't resist taking this photo of a fern growing in one of the car park's posts.<br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5224729690285291250" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixA_gbdBsWOSfnU5Q7LSI5-Za54TBoUDWJPJXMxYsxspF3BSrHED0QriW1CVffxzCbeaNKltTrwwmJm1JsBmYEV9ZA8WU5g9ZPWwjaraG1Uij1WCfya1lZly_sSwKoUCSxrBMLCcmu4g40/s400/BeachMeadowsBeach_0.jpg" border="0" />Sara and Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15434230667597239457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6359397686590093594.post-82892401570511372582008-07-09T11:47:00.002-03:002008-08-21T14:10:12.977-03:00Green BayWe heard a lot about Green Bay from the locals, so headed down to see for ourselves. A narrow road from Petite Riviere takes you to Green Bay past some homes and cottages all nestled closely together along the coast. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJXdiS15BpI0jD-xNjLIwbAHJlx1xOWN4ZTiMTinDDDPILOZA6oNd316Itosx_HcY-2Cm0Rh7ZUMJcyEbzuzc2WNSH4lE_8lzUEgUyETR-RkuBqkL_OTH6nDJg0I1Cz8WlZFilReNthesd/s1600-h/GreenBay_1.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221027103580910082" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJXdiS15BpI0jD-xNjLIwbAHJlx1xOWN4ZTiMTinDDDPILOZA6oNd316Itosx_HcY-2Cm0Rh7ZUMJcyEbzuzc2WNSH4lE_8lzUEgUyETR-RkuBqkL_OTH6nDJg0I1Cz8WlZFilReNthesd/s400/GreenBay_1.jpg" border="0" /></a>We arrived at sixish one evening, on a bright and sunny glorious day. The tide was out and almost at its lowest level.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQmK9Ge3E-wIKRvA-Fgq_BCBdu-eqD5aNxIIfnogpavlZYxusHQDYcOnnTiRZ3WGCDc3atnTxQ9k6SENEEMo-r_pbDviXNvSSlxiGB1gEGbcFP3mV26MJUp7K69-N1uekr61rfCKG4lUO1/s1600-h/GreenBay_2.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221027104343285746" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQmK9Ge3E-wIKRvA-Fgq_BCBdu-eqD5aNxIIfnogpavlZYxusHQDYcOnnTiRZ3WGCDc3atnTxQ9k6SENEEMo-r_pbDviXNvSSlxiGB1gEGbcFP3mV26MJUp7K69-N1uekr61rfCKG4lUO1/s400/GreenBay_2.jpg" border="0" /></a> Macleod's is the spot for eating in Green Bay...you can eat in, or order out. We saw the sign for Blue Rocks...a road we've never been on...and decided to check it out. It was a foggy day, and the landscape reminded me of our trip to Newfoundland last year.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5216194669809729282" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hwMQYKP_gHA/SGOlamVLfwI/AAAAAAAAAiQ/0FevmBU18NM/s400/BlueRocks_Heron2.jpg" border="0" />We spotted some herons and stopped to take some photos. They are such majestic birds. <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5216194668366086610" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hwMQYKP_gHA/SGOlag8_QdI/AAAAAAAAAiI/fb40bsBf1fI/s400/BlueRocks_Heron.jpg" border="0" />We went all the way out to the point of Blue Rocks, which looked like it must be a true fishing community. It was a lovely bay with some quaint homes and cottages. I'm sure it's a wonderful place to be in the summer, but winter must be very isolated. I should have taken some photos there, but I didn't. On the way back towards Lunenburg, we spotted a woman painting at the side of the road.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5216194663136550530" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_HCBeLEvmhBqtR_mRueUId0CXP3zFzoqUh-uR0L9pYsKoHL8IGxMZn0wUt8LTSNFUHVs172bMsP35Aq0_j3VIWTPqoE0jS5f9yvqlK0GSRKIvE6E9MCylfLc2I87LoymRocf1_oNTi8kO/s400/BlueRocks_JoyLaking.jpg" border="0" />I asked if I could take her photo and we chatted for a few minutes. It turns out she lives on the other side of the province, but tours the area so she can paint on site. Her name is <a href="http://www.joylakinggallery.com/">Joy Laking</a>, and she'll be exhibiting in Lunenburg at the end of July.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5216194675254798578" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hwMQYKP_gHA/SGOla6nYqPI/AAAAAAAAAiY/Aj1VZteRls4/s400/BlueRocks_scenery.jpg" border="0" /> She said she has painted the view of this old building every year for the past 30 years.<br /><br />And, one last photo. This is a little tourist shop which was closed the day we were there. It looks like they might have some interesting things. The outside is certainly full of character!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFhlsoDh0q7uOZ7F0Ri668Ys-b1HRI5YHSsc3h95pvZTR-SEZHosJGFUCa3Vm8uKv-0pan8eLSAksMhqFY7IHCS_325PdUlIDxVqlCnux2kIHde7LW3bns90ZPvwV3g9bd7fykQW7arkWH/s1600-h/BlueRocks_GiftShop.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5216194668650328642" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFhlsoDh0q7uOZ7F0Ri668Ys-b1HRI5YHSsc3h95pvZTR-SEZHosJGFUCa3Vm8uKv-0pan8eLSAksMhqFY7IHCS_325PdUlIDxVqlCnux2kIHde7LW3bns90ZPvwV3g9bd7fykQW7arkWH/s400/BlueRocks_GiftShop.jpg" border="0" /></a>Sara and Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15434230667597239457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6359397686590093594.post-74511678764493452452008-06-23T11:30:00.002-03:002008-08-21T14:11:02.068-03:00Chester - The Rope Loft RestaurantChester is one of my favourite places along the South Shore of Nova Scotia. A week or so ago, we were in Halifax for an appointment. Afterwards, we headed back home via the scenic route and stopped in Chester for lunch.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215080700042029394" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hwMQYKP_gHA/SF-wRBkAKVI/AAAAAAAAAhw/iPSNs-pL5Y8/s400/RopeLoftRestaurant.jpg" border="0" /><a href="http://ropeloft.com/">The Rope Loft Restaurant</a> is right on the shore. It was a very windy day, but absolutely lovely...bright and sunny. A perfect day for lunching on the deck overlooking the bay.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215080697321764994" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hwMQYKP_gHA/SF-wQ3bcOII/AAAAAAAAAhY/VSr9MWTPITc/s400/RopeLoft_John.jpg" border="0" />Lunch was delicious. We both had the day's special...crab cakes with salad. John chose the caesar salad and I had the greek. <em>Yum.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215080695430546434" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK_6lQFKAuFUsw6gXCo_otdJeBMvZMQPn-8XnUnO_26TsRPFr5iwvlTzAK_Ir-Rff9Sxl8290sIoyZUWamjZX1lTIsOdplezrCwqlGPKeGqSpdGcYlM_a__8TfRB16EzB_i2WCN4DtYmj5/s400/RopeLoft_deck.jpg" border="0" /></em>This view shows the pier with more tables and chairs for the restaurant. The pier looks out towards the ocean. The hill on the other side of the bay has some spectacular homes. I wouldn't want to think about the price of them...out of our reach for sure!<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215080699183622514" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hwMQYKP_gHA/SF-wQ-XV6XI/AAAAAAAAAhg/0ss_tUF4QBQ/s400/RopeLoft_view.jpg" border="0" />In the distance, you can see a yacht. The yacht is about 5 times larger than the ferry that goes from Chester over to Tancook Island. According to the people working at the restaurant, the yacht's name is <em>The Intuition</em>. Lunching at a table next to us were 3 couples...eavesdropping a bit on their conversation one man was a producer, and another an actor. When they left on their boat, they headed out to the yacht which led us to lots of speculation...but they were just sightseeing on their way to somewhere else. <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215080696516232098" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja4Gl5EJTu2JmLgT9goTJPTZU5N9VlaHpgOqr3yocxIdm_i0zciHo9if_2TqEtGimU0q0iAcn8kyR1qOJhRlWPyJa3zP_8FqP7b0223SBgGLq4XpeNtdybrjlgVWHVmM538Qm_XqqaI8O7/s400/RopeLoft_Windows.jpg" border="0" />The restaurant has 2 decks. We were on the lower deck. The upper was closed off for the day. I'm sure it gets packed during tourist season (July & August). The windows along the building on the lower level were all topped with tole painted buildings and lighthouses. Very quaint.<br /><p>Just a lovely afternoon. Can't wait to go back.</p>Sara and Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15434230667597239457noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6359397686590093594.post-24350995417135197282008-06-17T11:05:00.000-03:002008-06-17T11:14:43.756-03:00WelcomeWe have loved travelling to Nova Scotia for years and years. We started by renting a cottage for 2 weeks 11 years ago. Then we had family move to Halifax and travelled to the east coast 2 or 3 times each year to visit them. Each time we visited, we fell more in love with the province and dreamed about living there.<br /><div></div><br /><div>Then all of a sudden it was the right time in our lives. We were empty nesters. John's stint in municipal politics was in hiatus. And it was "now or never"...as in...if we didn't do it now, we'd never do it.</div><br /><div></div><div>We found a 20 acre property in the country along the south shore of Nova Scotia.
